What's on

  • Pacific Rim Whale Festival March

    Grey whale migration

Worth knowing

  • A car, effectively. The village, Cox Bay and Long Beach are strung along one road, with a summer shuttle and bicycles covering part of it.

    getting around · editorial

  • Fly to Vancouver, then either a short hop to Tofino or the ferry to Nanaimo and about three hours of driving. The last stretch is a slow, winding mountain road.

    getting there · editorial

  • The water is cold all year: surfing means a thick wetsuit in August as much as in January. Beach car parks in the national park reserve need a vehicle pass.

    know before · editorial

  • Cards everywhere. Tipping is expected at North American rates.

    money · editorial

  • There is no dead season, but the road is at its worst in winter storms and the village sells out entirely on summer long weekends.

when not to go · editorial

  • Tofino village for restaurants and the harbour. Cox Bay and Chesterman Beach for surf on the doorstep. Ucluelet at the far end of the park is quieter and about forty minutes away.

Quests

Icon

  • Chesterman Beach

The village beach, with a tide that redraws the map twice a day.

  • Cox Bay

The most consistent wave around, and for that reason the busiest.

  • Tofino harbour

Where the boats and the floatplanes leave from. The end of the road, literally.

  • Long Beach

Sixteen kilometres of sand inside Pacific Rim.

  • Wild Pacific Trail

The coast path at Ucluelet, with the lighthouse at the end.

See

  • Walk the whole of Long Beach at low tide

Eat

  • Eat a fish taco from a food truck in Tofino

  • Eat a fresh fish taco straight after the water

Food from a trailer, and the right food.

  • Have hot chowder on a rainy day

It rains half the year. The chance will come.

Moment

  • Watch a winter storm from the beach, wrapped up

  • Watch a winter storm from indoors, with the window facing the sea

That is the reason people go there in January.

  • Walk out at low tide as far as the sand allows

A kilometre of exposed sea floor.

Trail

  • Take a boat to the hot springs along the coast and return the same day

An hour and a half of open sea, then a boardwalk through the forest.

Water

  • Get in the water in a wetsuit and catch a wave

Nine degrees all year. The neoprene is not optional.
