What's on

  • Arctic Lapland Rally March

    Winter rally through the forests

  • Christmas opening December

The season kicks off with the lighting ceremony

Worth knowing

  • Cards for everything, including the smallest purchases and buses. Cash is barely used. Tipping is not expected.

    money · editorial

  • In midwinter the sun does not properly rise and you get a few hours of blue twilight. The aurora is weather and solar luck combined and no tour can promise it, so give yourself several nights. Thermal suits and boots are lent out by activity operators, so do not buy an arctic wardrobe.

    know before · editorial

  • Summer, if you came for snow or the aurora: there is neither, and the sun barely sets. Early winter snow is unreliable, and spring is slush. Christmas and New Year is the peak, sold out far ahead.

when not to go · editorial

  • Town for restaurants, shops and the museums. The Santa village sits between town and the airport. The glass cabins and wilderness lodges are out in the forest, where the sky is dark enough to be worth it, and where you are dependent on transfers.

    where to stay · editorial

  • Local buses are sparse and most winter activities include a pickup from your accommodation, which covers most people. A car gives you the freedom to chase clear sky for the aurora, at the cost of driving on ice in the dark.

    getting around · editorial

  • Rovaniemi airport is ten minutes from town. The alternative is the overnight sleeper train from Helsinki, which takes about twelve hours and can carry your car north with you.

Quests

Icon

  • The Arctic Circle line

66°33' north, painted on the ground. Stand on both sides of it.

  • Arktikum

Half the museum is a glass tube pointed north.

  • Jätkänkynttilä Bridge

The lumberjack's candle, with the flame burning high above the Kemijoki.

  • Ounasvaara

The town's own hill. Twenty minutes on foot and the forest has already swallowed the noise.

  • Rovaniemi Church

Rebuilt after 1944, when the whole town was burned.

  • The frozen Kemijoki

In January you walk across what in July takes a boat.

See

  • Cross the Arctic Circle on foot

Eat

  • Eat salmon roasted over a fire at the edge of the ice

  • Lohikeitto

Salmon soup with cream and dill. It is lunch, not a starter.

  • Reindeer

Sautéed, with mash and lingonberry jam. Here it is ordinary meat.

  • Lakka liqueur

Cloudberry, picked in the bog in July, kept all year.

Moment

  • Spend a night under the aurora without a phone in your hand

  • The northern lights

September to March, away from the lights, with patience and warm clothes.

  • Sauna, then a hole in the ice

Eighty degrees, then straight into the lake. That is how it is done here.

Trail

  • A whole night awake waiting on the sky

No tour, no guide, no guarantee. Sometimes it does not come, and that is part of it.
