What's on

  • Dry-season peak August

    Etosha waterholes crowded with game

Worth knowing

  • Cards work in Windhoek, Swakopmund and at lodges. Carry Namibian dollars for fuel stops, park gates and anything rural; South African rand is accepted at par.

    money · editorial

  • Fuel and mobile signal both disappear for long stretches; fill up whenever you pass a pump and tell somebody your route. Gravel punctures are the standard mishap, so two spares is normal, not paranoid.

    know before · editorial

  • The rains come in the southern summer, roughly January and February, when gravel roads wash out and tracks close. Heat in the middle of the day is punishing year-round.

when not to go · editorial

  • Sesriem for the dune gates, Swakopmund for the coast, the camps inside Etosha for waterholes you can sit at after dark. Staying inside the park gates is what gets you to the dunes at sunrise; lodges outside cannot.

    where to stay · editorial

  • A high-clearance vehicle, self-driven. There is no public transport between the parks, the distances run to hundreds of kilometres, and gravel is the default surface.

    getting around · editorial

  • Windhoek is the entry point and everything after it is a drive. Sossusvlei is the best part of a day south, much of it on gravel; the Skeleton Coast is reached west through Swakopmund, another long day.

Quests

Icon

  • Dune 45

The dune at kilometre 45. You climb the ridge barefoot, before the sun heats it.

  • Deadvlei

The white clay pan with the dead acacias still standing after nine hundred years.

  • Sesriem Canyon

A thirty-metre slot in the floor of the desert.

  • Sesriem Gate

The park gate. It opens at sunrise, and that is where the queue forms.

  • Cape Cross

The fur seal colony on the Skeleton Coast. The smell arrives first.

  • Swakopmund

The German town leaning against the desert, with fog most mornings.

See

  • Climb Big Daddy and run down to Deadvlei

Eat

  • Eat kapana straight off the street grill

  • Eat a good piece of game at dinner

Oryx, kudu or springbok. It is what the region eats.

  • Have breakfast before five, to catch the gate as it opens

The desert is worth the bad hour.

Moment

  • Reach Sossusvlei before the sun, when the dune is half in shadow

  • Spend a night with no artificial light in sight

Desert sky. You need no equipment at all.

  • Stay at Deadvlei until the shadow leaves the pan

The light changes the colour of the whole place in twenty minutes.

Trail

  • Climb Big Daddy and run down the face to Deadvlei

An hour of soft sand going up, two minutes coming down.
