What's on

  • Kruger Marathon Run Wild September

    Run inside the park

Worth knowing

  • In Kruger proper you drive yourself on tar and gravel, which is the whole appeal. In the private reserves you never touch a steering wheel: guides drive open vehicles, and off-road tracking is only permitted on that side of the fence.

    getting around · editorial

  • Johannesburg, then either a five to six hour drive east or a short flight to Nelspruit or to the airstrip at Skukuza. The private reserves have their own strips and arrange the last leg.

    getting there · editorial

  • Camp gates open and close with the sun and being caught out after closing is a fineable offence, so plan the drive home. The lowveld is a malaria area, which is worth raising with a doctor before you book.

    know before · editorial

  • Cards work at rest camps, gates and lodges. Keep cash rand for tips, which are expected for guides and trackers and are a real part of what a private-reserve stay costs.

    money · editorial

  • The wet summer months grow thick bush and high grass that hides everything, scatter the animals away from waterholes and bring the mosquitoes. Midday heat then flattens the middle of every day.

when not to go · editorial

  • Kruger''s own rest camps for self-drive, the western private reserves such as Sabi Sands for guided drives and unfenced lodges. Hazyview and White River sit outside the gates as a base. The south of the park is busier and denser in game; the north is emptier and more about birds and landscape.

Quests

Icon

  • Paul Kruger Gate

The classic way in, on the Skukuza side.

  • Skukuza

The largest camp in the park, on the bank of the Sabie river.

  • Lower Sabie

The terrace above the river, where the elephants come down to drink in the afternoon.

  • Satara

Open plain, lion country. You hear more than you see.

  • Olifants River

The camp on top of the cliff, with the river far below.

See

  • See a leopard in Sabi Sands — it is where the odds are real

Eat

  • Eat a braai with the dark bush all around

  • Cook a braai at camp after the gate closes

Charcoal, grill and no hurry. The gate only opens again in the morning.

  • Eat biltong in the car in the middle of a long wait

The waiting is part of it. So is the biltong.

Moment

  • Take the 5.30 game drive; the cold is worth it

  • Sit still for twenty minutes at a waterhole, engine off

The animals appear when the car goes quiet.

  • See the big five on one trip

Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. It can take days.

  • Head out on a drive before the sun rises

The gate opens in the dark. It is the best hour and it is always cold.

Trail

  • Take a guided walk into the bush with an armed guide

Only with an armed guide, booked in advance. The scale changes when you are on foot.
