Worth knowing
Cairns city is walkable. A car earns its keep for Port Douglas, the Daintree and the Atherton Tablelands; on reef days it sits in a car park.
getting around · editorial
Cairns airport is ten minutes from the city, with domestic flights and a few international ones. Reef boats leave from the marina in town and the outer reef is one and a half to two and a half hours out.
getting there · editorial
Cairns has no beach of its own; there is a lagoon pool on the esplanade instead. Reef days are long and the crossing is rough enough that seasickness tablets matter.

Cards everywhere, contactless on small purchases included. Tipping is not expected.

The wet season brings heat, humidity and cyclones, and box jellyfish make the mainland beaches unswimmable without a suit through the southern summer.
when not to go · editorial
Cairns city for boat departures, the esplanade and the widest choice. Palm Cove for a quieter beach strip half an hour north. Port Douglas, an hour up the coast, for the Daintree and the northern reef.

Quests

Cairns Esplanade
The public lagoon on the seafront, because the sea there has crocodiles in it.
Port Douglas
The closest base to the northern reef and the forest.
Daintree
The oldest rainforest on Earth, running straight into the reef.
Cape Tribulation
Where the rainforest reaches the beach. Cook gave it the name.
Kuranda
The mountain village, with the 1891 railway and the cableway over the forest.
Green Island
A coral island with the reef right up against the sand, 45 minutes away.
See
Dive an outer reef, not the one close in
Eat
Eat grilled barramundi
Eat grilled barramundi at lunch
The fish of the north, and it stands up to the coals.
Try a tropical fruit you have never seen before
The north has about ten that never leave the region.
Moment
Go out by boat before 7am, while the sea is still flat
Float still above the coral and move nothing
No fin, no hand, no ordinary sunscreen.
Watch a shoal pass beneath you and let it pass
You chase nothing here.
Water
Dive the outer reef with a tank
Two hours by boat, and water clearer than anything inside.
